Falkland Islands Meat Company – Achieving BRCGS Accreditation from Afar

‘Brand Reputation through Compliance’

Client: Falkland Islands Meat Company
Industry: Slaughter and Butchery Plant

The Falkland Islands Meat Company (FIMCo) is a government-owned slaughter and butchery plant located in the Falkland Islands. With a core team of around 15 staff during the low season, expanding to 40 during peak export months, FIMCo plays a vital role in supporting the local agricultural economy. The company is committed to producing high-quality meat products for international markets while upholding rigorous food safety standards.

The Challenge

To remain competitive in international markets and meet the expectations of export clients, FIMCo needed to achieve BRCGS accreditation. However, the company faced several unique challenges:

  • Geographic isolation – located thousands of miles from the UK mainland.
  • Limited on-site technical expertise – a shortage of qualified food safety and QA professionals.
  • Distinct regulatory framework – operating under Falkland Islands legislation.
  • Seasonal operations – with a 7-month local market season and a 5-month export season.

FIMCo approached Food Safety Assist based on our strong reputation for delivering tailored, high-quality support in complex environments.

Our Solution

We provided a phased, remote-first support programme tailored to the meat industry, including:

  • Development of a bespoke food safety management system aligned with BRCGS requirements.
  • Ongoing remote support, supplemented by a dedicated on-site visit.
  • Shared delivery between two consultants to ensure robust scrutiny and diverse expertise.

The project was delivered in two key phases:

  1. Initial 18 months – implementation of the BRCGS START! Intermediate system.
  2. Following 12 months – progression to full BRCGS Food Safety Standard (Issue 9) certification.

Implementation

The solution was delivered primarily through remote collaboration, with one on-site visit to support system development and training. Key personnel included:

  • From Food Safety Assist: Brian and Gill
  • From FIMCo: Dave Roberts (General Manager) and the on-site technical team

Over the course of three years, we supported three different Quality Assurance Managers (QAMs), adapting our approach to ensure continuity and knowledge transfer. We continue to provide training and mentoring to the site team.

Results & Impact

  • BRCGS START! Intermediate achieved after 18 months
  • BRCGS Food Safety (Issue 9) certification achieved 12 months later
  • Enabled FIMCo to access new export markets and increase product pricing
  • Strengthened internal food safety culture and technical capability

Client Feedback

“Excellent support and assistance from Food Safety Assist in helping FIMCo attain certification in BRCGS Food.

We have now been working with Brian and Gill for three years and they have been able to assist, advise and support us through the process. Also, with the continued support in developing and training the team.

The team here at Sand Bay have nothing but praise for the team at Food Safety Assist.” – Dave Roberts, General Manager, FIMCo

Looking Ahead

We continue to support FIMCo, currently working with their third QAM. Due to the seasonal nature of their operations and the remote location, attracting and retaining technical staff remains a challenge. Our ongoing support ensures continuity, compliance, and continuous improvement.
